Is your bedroom looking tired?

In need of an update for your sanctuary? We have some great ideas and tips about where to go for inspiration and savings.

We love a good sale and one of our favourite places to shop is Urban Barn. We love the style, prices and service. Negar at the Park Royal store is amazing to work with. Urban Barn is having a 30% off bedroom furniture sale now! We love Urban Barn’s selection of upholstered beds and the rustic wood furniture.

For a more custom alternative, try CF Interiors. They have an amazing selection of Van Gogh upholstered beds and bedroom furniture that you can choose everything from knobs to colour. The Living Lab in North Van also has some of the same lines and other unique decor pieces and pillows to finish off your space.

Tip: place your bed on the wall facing the bedroom door so it welcomes you when you enter the room. We find this placement inviting and photographs well. The bed should be the focal point of the room.

Tip: finish your space with bedside lamps and a few accent pieces (no more than 3). A hardcover book with a decorative candle on top and a small potted plant look great.

We love the lamps at CF Interiors but you can find something great at Homesense too! Think of lighting as jewellery. It’s an accessory to highlight the main furniture pieces.

Tip: Assuming that your nightstand is the roughly the same height as your mattress, look for a lamp the same height as your nightstand plus an extra 2 or 3 inches. So, if your nightstand is 24” high, a lamp that is about 27” tall would look best.

Rugs create warmth and a nice place for your feet to land when you get up in the morning. Make sure the colours tie in with what you already have or choose a neutral colour in the same tone as your floor. The area rug should frame the bed so there is a border surrounding it.

Tip: the rug can stop in front of the bedside tables. A king size bed works well with a 9’ by 12” while a queen works well with a 8’ by 10’. The rug should create a border of 18-24”.

For more info click here to read a recent article about rug sizing from The Spruce we found. The Spruce is a great resource for home advice. Jenny and I refer to it almost daily!

Our go-to for all things bedding? The Bay. Wait for a sale and Bay Day combo or Scratch and Save and you will feel like they are giving away the store!

We have found sheets, quilts and pillows at 40, 50 even 60% off. Our favourite is the Gluckstein Home “Davenport” Collection. 700 thread count makes these sheets durable yet soft. Colour? We love white. Makes your bed look like a hotel bed. Great for staging to sell too. Here is the link to the sheets we love!

Worried about keeping white sheets white? We use tide and bleach in a hot water wash. We find everything dries faster with Nellies wool dryer balls. Nellies products can be found at London Drugs and sometimes Homesense. We love the smell of downy so we add that to the rinse cycle. Is there anything better than fresh smelling clean sheets?

Tip: 2 bounce sheets in dryer will help reduce wrinkles.

For quilts and pillows, we love Ralph Lauren Home. Allergies? You can rest easy. They make down alternative products too. Wait for The Bay’s bedding Sale to purchase and you will likely save 40-50%.

Tip: Purchase less expensive poly-fill pillows for shams and remove from bed at night. These pillows keep their shape without the fluffing that down needs.

Don’t forget to pick up pillow and mattress protectors and a mattress pad too. These will keep things stain free and help your mattress and pillows last longer. We like to put a mattress pad over the mattress protector. You can find mattress pads with a terry cover which is much quieter than plastic at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Tip: make your bed every morning. It is so nice to get into a made bed at night. Keeps sheets from getting terribly wrinkled too.
